NuPipe was called out to do a hydro jet on a sewer at a customer's residence. The customer was experiencing back ups in his basement and he wanted us to find a permanent fix. According to the customer the back ups have been going from time to time for the last five or so years. You could tell by the customer’s voice he was fed up and needed a permanent solution, one that did not allow for future backups of raw sewage back into the basement. Upon visiting the contractor decided to run a camera down the line to see what the pipe was made out of, sure enough it was his old nemesis, Orangeburg pipe. Orangeburg pipe was used many decades ago, and whenever possible it should be removed. Orangeburg pipe is bituminized fiber pipe made from layers of wood pulp and pitch pressed together. It was used from the 1860s through the 1970s, when it was replaced by PVC pipe for water delivery and in this case, sewer pipes as well. Whenever Orangeburg pipe is encountered it needs to be removed or relined.

Birmingham Trenchless Orangeburg Sewer Pipe Lining

The customer had never heard of trenchless sewer line repair and was expecting the contractor to dig up the entire yard because he wanted that faulty pipe out of his house and property. The old Orangeburg was showed to him and he could see it falling apart and breaking down right in front of him. When the contractor told him what could be done, and showed him the examples he could not believe it was possible so he approved lining his entire Orangeburg sewer pipe all the way out to the street. The customer started to make plans to vacate the property and he thought a repair of this undertaking and magnitude would require finding a place to live for the next several days. Boy was he wrong, and it was explained that this process would take about a day and his sewer would be up and running by the end of the day.

In addition to replacing all the faulty pipe, the contractor was also able to save the customers front porch and a big, beautiful tree in the front yard. Moreover, the whole process was completed in less than a day. This was a very, very satisfied client as he gave NuPipe the best review they have ever had. After the repair was completed and by the recommendation of the customer several other neighbors had the exact same problem, this section of the neighborhood still had Orangeburg pipe in the ground.
